Animal Inquiries to Launch Geographic Studies

August 04, 2022

Middle school students are still at the age where they are fascinated by weird and unique animals. Luckily, some of the most unique animals have adapted to very original geographic features.

Using inquiry, students can begin investigating weird and species from around the world to start to see the unique environments and biomes that exist.

When the conversation shifts from basic facts to deeper questions and analysis of specific adaptations, classrooms can start to see the relationship between animals, adaptations, and environment.

One super unique region is China and Eastern Asia. There are very very unique animals that exist in the remote jungles, arid highlands, and muddy waterways of the region.

Beginning an interdisciplinary project with animals can form a strong foundation for discussion the impact of geography on animals and then a discussion about how geography affects society. Ultimately, these types of projects can serve as launch points for individual units or launch points for deeper interdisciplinary work.

In my Wildlife of Ancient China Research Project, students research one species and then create a digital (or print) flip book. These projects are a great way to engage middle school students in authentic reading, research, and writing. Plus it makes a great presentation!
